He received the rudiments of his education in the district schools attended Canandaigua academy; and in 1878 graduated from the United States naval academy at Annapolis, Md. In 1879-80 he was in the navy on cruises in the Mediterranean and on the Atlantic coast; and in 1881 was connected with the bureau of steam engineering. In 1898-99 he was chief engineer in the United States navy; in the SpanishAmerican war he was attached to the United States steamship Yosemite; and subsequently was in the league navy yard. Since 1881 he has been profesor of mechanical engineering at the university of Michigan; and is dean of the department of engineering. In 1890-91 he was president of the common council of Ann Arbor, Mich.; and in 1903 was president of the Michigan engineering society.
•Cooley, Roger William, lawyer, lecturer, author, was born Dee. 25, 1859, in Decorah, Iowa. He began the practice of law in 1884; and in 1887 was secretary of the committee to revise the laws of Dakota. Since 1906 he has been instructor in insurance at the St, Paul college of law. Cooley, Theodore, soldier, banker, was born April 3, 1842, in Nashville, Tenn. In 1861 he enlisted in the first Tennessee regiment; and attained the rank of quartermaster. Since 1884 he has been superintend ent of the southern department of the Guarantee insurance company of North America. Cooley, Thomas Mclntyre, lawyer, jurist, author, was born Jan. 6, 1834, in Attica, N. Y. In 1864-85 he was a justice of the supreme court of Michigan; and chief justice in 1867-69. He was professor of history in the university of Michigan. He is the autho^ of Law of Taxation; Law of Torts; General Principles of Constitutional Law in the United States; Treatise on Constitutional Limitations of the Legislative Power in the Several States annotated editions of Blackstone's Story Commentaries; and Michigan, a History of Governments. He died Sept. 13, 1898, in Ann Arbor, Mich. Coolidge, Carlos, lawyer, state senator, governor, was born in 1792 in Windsor, Vt. He was state attorney for his county in 1831-36; representative in 1834-37; and in 1839-47, 1839 to 1842; and was speaker in 1836. He was the sixteenth governor of Vermont in 1849-50; and was a state senator in 1855-57. He died Aug. 15, 1866, in Windsor, Coolidge, Charles AUerton, designer, architect, was born Nov. 30, 1858, in Boston, Mass. He built the Stanford university of California; the Ames building; and the new Harvard medical school buildings in Boston, Mass. Coolidge, Charles Austin, soldier, was born July 19, 1844, in Boston, Mass. In 1862 he entered the sixteenth United States infantry; became second lieutenant in 1864; and was promoted to lieutenant-colonel in 1899. In 1903 he was retired as brigadier-general. Coolidge, Clarence Edwin, educator, author. He practiced civil engineering for eight years; and since 1900 has been professor of machine design at Cornell university at Ithaca, N.Y. He is the author of several Monographs. Coolidge, Emelyn Lincoln, physician, author, was born Oct. 8, 1861, in Natick, Mass. Since 1900 she has been engaged in practice as children's specialist in New York City; and since 1902 has conducted the babies' page in the Ladies' Home Journal. She is the author of The Mothers' Maunal. Coolidge, Frederick Spaulding, manufacturer, congressman, was born Dec, 7, 1841, in Westminister, Mass. He is manager of the Boston chair manufacturing company and of the Leominster rattan works. He was democratic elector in 1888 and was a representative to the general court of Massachusetts in 1875. In 1891-93 he was a representative from Massachusetts to the fifty-second congress as a democrat. Coolidge, Louis Arthur, journalist, author, was born Oct. 8, 1861, in Natick, Mass.
