The language of law, literature, and religion, is the Kawi of Java, which, as written and taught in Bali, offers no new feature of distinction. The literature of the Balinese seems to be the same as that of the Javanese in the days of their Hindu- ism ; and the ancient indigenous legends of the Javanese are as well known in Bali as in their pa- rent island.
