Second daughter of James II., and wife of George, Prince of Denmark, now ascended the throne, to the satisfaction of all parties. Anne declared war with France, in which she was followed by the Dutch. The Duke of Marlborough was made general of the English forces, and generalissimo of the allied army, and became a very formidable enemy of France. A series of splendid victories were achieved by the allies, of which the chief was that of Blenhiem. For this victory, one of the greatest ever won by England, the Duke of Marlborough was rewarded by the gift of a large estate and splendid mansion.
