other Societies of a similar nature, that pretend to reform the defects of government, while selfish views are concealed under the imposing outside of philanthropy and patriotism; and the seeds of disaffection to the existing laws and of rebellion, are disseminated under the pretext of applying an healing balsam to the bleeding wounds of the Country.

The subsequent pages are, indeed, no pattern of a perfect Romance; however, the defects they evidently have are overbalanced by so many beauties, that the translator flatters himself their appearance in an English garb will, nevertheless, meet with a kind reception. If we consider that the author intended to erect therein a grateful monument to his dearest friends, to give a gentle warning to his numerous enemies, and to exhibit a faithful picture of the formation of his principles and of his character, which has been traduced with the bitterest acrimony; if we consider all this, we cannot butmake
