In the adversity of our best friends we often find something which does not displease us.
Adversity reminds men of religion.
The Good are better made by Ill,
As odours crushed are sweeter still.
Behold a worthy sight, to which the God, turning his attention to his own work, may direct his gaze. Behold an equal thing, worthy of a God, a brave man matched in conflict with evil fortune.
Great men rejoice in adversity just as brave soldiers triumph in war.
Sweet are the uses of adversity;
Which, like the toad, ugly and venomous,
Wears yet a precious jewel in his head.
A wretched soul, bruis'd with adversity,
We bid be quiet when we hear it cry;
But were we burthen'd with like weight of pain,
As much, or more, we should ourselves complain.
Let me embrace thee, sour adversity,
For wise men say it is the wisest course.
His overthrow heap'd happiness upon him;
For then, and not till then, he felt himself,
And found the blessedness of being little.
Then know, that I have little wealth to lose;
A man I am cross'd with adversity.
In all distresses of our friends
We first consult our private ends.

ADVICE
The worst men often give the best advice.
Our deeds are sometimes better than our thoughts.
A fop sometimes gives important advice.
Ah, gentle dames! it gars me greet,
To think how mony counsels sweet,
How mony lengthened, sage advices,
The husband frae the wife despises.
And may you better reck the rede,
Than ever did th' adviser.
She had a good opinion of advice,
Like all who give and eke receive it gratis.
For which small thanks are still the market price,
Even where the article at highest rate is.
Dicen, que el primer consejo
Ha de ser de la muger.
They say that the best counsel is that of woman.
Let no man value at a little price
A virtuous woman's counsel; her wing'd spirit
Is feather'd oftentimes with heavenly words.
'Twas good advice, and meant,
"My son, be good."
Know when to speake; for many times it brings
Danger to give the best advice to kings.
Whatever advice you give, be short.
In great straits and when hope is small, the boldest counsels are the safest.
No adventures mucho tu riqueza
Por consejo de hombre que ha pobreza.
Hazard not your wealth on a poor man's advice.
