Bartlett, Bailey, 1750-1830. A Lay- man. An American patriot; b. in Haver- hill, Mass.; a friend of John and Samuel Adams, and was with them at Philadel- phia in 1776, when the Declaration of Independence was declared; a member of the Mass. Convention to adopt the U.S. Constitution; held the office of sheriff of Essex Co. for about 40 years; and was an M.C. from Massachusetts 1797-1801.
Bartlett, David W. 1828-, D. W. B.; Van} Spectator. An American journalist; bf in Bloomfield, Hartford Co., Conn. In 1857 he went to Washing- ton to assist Dr. Bailey in editing the "National Era." Eor more than 20 years he was correspondent of the " Springfield Republican/' over the signature of
" Van " ; for nearly the same period for
the New York " Independent " as " D.
W. B."; and for the Boston "Congrega-
tionahst" as "Spectator"; in 1878 he
became American Secretary of Legation
of the Chinese Legation at Washington.

D. at Woodbridge.

An American lawyer ; b. at Lan- caster, Penn ; was educ. chiefly in- England; returning home in 1779, he was soon admitted to the Lancaster bar ; in 1789 he was appointed by Washing- ton one of the judges of the Western Territory ; he was then President Judge of his district in Penn. ; in 1800 was ap- pointed Prothonotary of Lancaster Co., and Clerk of the Orphans' Court, 1803-9 ; afterwards removed to Philadelphia, where he was Secretary to the American Philosophical Society of that city.
