Preface to the Third Edition
The first edition of this translation of Krilof contained ninety-three Fables; in the present edition I have given fifty-five more. The work as it now stands contains all Krilof's original Fables, with the exception of about half a dozen. The latter I have omitted for the reason which induced me to pass over the greater part of the "Morals." It is sometimes better to leave verses alone than to turn them into prose. The imitations of Æsop and La Fontaine, also, I have not yet attempted, their chief merit being one of form, of which no prose version can give any idea.
