From the commencement of this Work it has been our uniform anxiety to adorn it with as much of pictorial beauty and interest as possible, and the present, although, at first appearance, embracing a subject not very favourable for such displays, will, we trust, be esteemed as not the least attractive in this respect, — while the absorbing interest of its literary details are probably second to none of the series. For the latter we are indebted to a reverend friend well known as one of the keenest observers, and most successful cultivators of the community of the tiny beings which form the subject before us. To our friend Mr. Duncan, the contributor of our Entomological volumes, the best acknowledgments are due for the extension of the subject in his interesting details of the Foreign and
