about eight feet square, with a window surrounded with large iron bars, a stove, a wooden bed with a mattress, a chair, and a table upon which was a wooden candlestick with a small bit of candle. I asked for drink, and they brought me some water in a wooden porringer. It was eleven o'clock in the evening, on the 10th December, 1794, a date which will certainly be for ever present in my memory.
