various ways. Among these I must mention Miss A.J. Robertson, whose edition of the Laws from Edmund to Canute is now approaching completion, and especially Miss N. Kershaw, who has given me valuable help in collating the manuscripts and in revising the text of the Laws. But most of all my thanks are due to Professor Chadwick. How great my obligations are to him only those who have had the privilege of working under him can form any idea. I have turned to him continually for help in the innumerable difficulties I have met with, and but for his constant and generous assistance I could hardly have completed my task. I must also thank the Syndics of the University Press for undertaking the publication of the book, and the staff for the efficient and obliging way in which the printing and corrections have been carried out.
