In the balloting for the vice-presidential nomination, he led all others on the fourth ballot, and the impression was widespread at the time that he could have had the nomination had he desired it. The political, journalistic and business aspects of his career have been characterized by energy, enterprise and a shrewd conservatism. In 1905 he obtained a controlling interest in the Washington "Post," which he has added to his many other interests at the National Capital.
