more took up the practice of law. In a few years he became prominent in the political affairs of his state, and from 1872 to 1896 he served seven times as a delegate to the Democratic national conventions. In the year last named he was elected to the United States senate as a Democrat, receiving more than his full party vote. He served on various important committees and his course was so satisfactory to his constituents that he was reelected for the term which will expire March 4, 1909.
Senator Pettus was married to Mary L. Chapman, June 27, 1844. Their home is in Selma, Alabama.
