Smith, Elder, & Co., in a series of quarterly vo- lumes. In May, 1883, he was elected to the Lectureship of English Litera- ture at Cambridge, founded in honour of the late W. G. Clark, of Trinity College. Mr. Stephen mar- ried Miss Harriet Marian, younger daughter of Mr. William Make- peace Thackeray, the celebrated novelist. (This lady died in 1875.) STEWAET, Balfoub. LL.D., F.R.S., born Nov. 1, 1828, at Edin- burgh, was educated at the Univer- sities of St. Andrews and Edin- burgh. He was appointed Director of the Kew Observatory, July 1, , 1859 ; Secretary to the Meteorolo- j gical Committee, Jan. 1, 18C7 — an | appointment which he afterwards i resigned ; Professor of Natural j Philosophy in Owens College, Man- j Chester, July 7, 1870, which ap- pointment he now holds. Dr. Stewart is the discoverer of the law of equality between the absorptive and radiative powers of bodies, for which he received the Rumford Medal from the Eoyal Society in 1868. He is the author, jointly with Messrs. De La Eue and Loewy, of " Researches on Solar Physics ; " joint author with Professor Tait of
researches on the "Heating pro- duced by Rotation in Vacuo ; " and haa written numerous papers on " Meteorology and Magnetism," the latest of these being an article on " Terrestrial Magnetism " for the " Encyclopsedia Britannioa," in which he advances a working hypo- thesis; an "Elementary '^eatise on Heat," published by the Cla- rendon Press, Oxford ; " Leaaona in Elementary Physics," 1871 ; " Phy- sics," 1872, being one of a series of " Science Primers ; " and " The Conservation of Energy," 1874. He is the author jointly with Pro- fessor Tait of the " Unseen Uni- verse," a book which has gone through ten editions ; and he is one of a Committee appointed to advise the Government on the sub- ject of Solar Physics.
STEWART, General Sib DoNAiiD Mabtin, Bart., G.C.B., was born in 1824. He received his education at the University of Aberdeen, and entered the Bengal Staff Corps in 1840. He served against the Hill Tribes in the* Peshawur district in 1854 and 1855, when he was honourably mentioned in the despatches. In May and June, 1857, at the outbreak of the Sepoy Mutiny, he commanded the volunteers serving in the AUyghur district. When all communication with the upi)er provinces was cut off Captain Stewart volunteered to carry despatches from the Govern- ment of the North- W^est Provinces to the officer commanding at Delhi. This he performed with success, and on his arrival at the camp before Delhi he was appointed Deputy Assistant - Adjutant - General, in which cajjacity ho served with the field force through- out the siege of Delhi. U ^ was again mentioned in dcsj)atcheB with signal approval, and was promoted to the brevet rankcf Major. He afterwards served in the siege of Lucknow as Assistant-Adjutant- General, and throughout the cam- paign in Rohilcund. His services
