MANTEUFFEL, Edwin Hans Cabl, Bason Von, General of the Cavalry and Adjutant-General of the Emperor of Germany, was born Feb. 24, 1809, at Magdeburg, being descended from an old Pomeranian noble family, which afterwards settled in Lower Lusatia. Induced by his en>ecial preference for a military life, he entered, April 29, 1827, the Dragoon Guards as Ad- vantageur, and received, on May 15, 1828, his patent as Second Lieutenant. In recognition of his. diligence and <3apacity, he was sent from 1834 to 1836 to the General Military Academy. In the years 1837-38 he acted as Begimental Ad- jutant, and in May of the latter year he was nominated Adjutant to the Government of Berlin. He became Adjutant to the 2nd Brig^e of Cavalry Guards, Oct. 18, 1839, and in the following year was ordered to attend on ffis BoyaJ Highness Prince Albrecht. In this capacity he was promoted in Jan., 1842, to be Promier-Lieutenant, and in Dec, 1843, was transferred

as Equerry to the Adjutancy, bei named Adjutant of H.B.H. PrinceJ Albrecht. At the oommencementl of the following year he was aggre- J gated, as Adjutant to the Prince ^ into the 1st loegiment of Dra^oor^ Guards. In 1854 he became Colonel with the command of the 3rd Cavalry Brigade. On Feb. 12, 1867, King Frederick William nominated him Chief of the De- partment for Personal Matters, with retention of his rank as Brigadier-Commandant. In May, 1858, Von ManteufPel was advanced to tiie grade of Major-General, being nominated at the same time General k la Suite of the King; and in Jan., 1861, he was made Ad- jutant-General, while on Oct. 18, the same year, he attained the rank of Lieutenant-C^eral. This rapid advancement excited envy, and Manteuffel was vigorously at- tacked in the democratic press. In the law case between Lieutenant- General von Manteuffel and Stadt- gerichstrath Carl Twesten (1861), the former had the greater part of the press against him. The alliance of Prussia and Austria for the so-called liberation of the Elbe Duchies was generally regarded as the work of General von li^uiteuffel, as he was especially in favour at the Court of Vienna. The Prussian Government sent him accordingly, in Jan., 1864, soon after the out- break of war in the Duchies, to Vienna, to propose energetic war measures, which task he discharged witii perfect success. In Feb., 1^, he was sent to the anny in Schleswig-Holstein, participated in the battie of Missunde, and in the
