PREFACE TO THE SECOND VOLUME.

The present volume contains, as announced in the Preface to the first, the Systematic Memoirs and Miscellaneous Descriptions of Plants; and to these have been added a number of short contributions to different publications, together with notices of the assistance acknowledged to have been afforded by the Author to various writers, wherever the nature of the assistance is distinctly pointed out.
In Pritzel's 'Thesaurus Literaturæ Botanicæ,' p. 35, at the end of the enumeration of Mr. Brown's works, it is stated, "Robertus Brown dedit præterea descriptiones ultimi (an etiam tertii?) Fasciculi Plantarum Cryptogamicarum Dicksonianarum, necnon eas tertii voluminis Plant. Coromand. Roxburghii, et curavit Editionem alteram Horti Kewensis a classe XII ad XXIV." To all the works here mentioned there is no doubt that Mr. Brown contributed valuable assistance, but of different kinds and in different degrees. The fourth fasciculus of Dickson's 'Plantæ Cryptogamicæ,' but not, I believe, the third, was largely indebted to him; but it would be difficult, if not impossible, to determine what portions of the text were actually furnished by him.
