Barfrestone and the old Saxon church there, and now and then a bathe at Deal or Walmer. My stay here and the occasional trips to Bassingbourne already mentioned, were all the experiences of country life I had until I was considerably older, and it has ever been a matter of regret to me that I had so little acquaintance with country sounds, scenes, and occupations in the more impressionable hours of childhood and early youth.
