I RETURNED from Paris in the middle of June 1852, having- studied less than five months there, but made good use of that short time and was fairly industrious. Meanwhile my father had emi- grated to Aus- tralia in the hope of retrieving his fallen fortunes. I found my mother and three brothers living in the upper
