PREFACE.


To My Friends:

I venture to give forth these poems in all their crudeness and I ask you to overlook the defects that exist in rhythm and metre: and, if you find anything readable, to remember the thought that prompted the utterings. I have never, in a single instance, attempted to make a correction or add a word, but have written the thoughts down just as they came into my mind; therefore, I ask your forbearance. and, should you find anything commendable herein, I shall be glad and feel that my work has not been an entire failure.
