ON the sandy beach I sate,
The dark weed round me strown,
Listening to the wind that brought
Its hollow message, lone—
      A whisper from the sea,
      And what it said to me.

Shells and flowers of the sea,
Sweet offspring of the deep;

      The whisper of the sea,
      And what it said to me.

A voice I heard from every shell,
In whispers softly come;
