LINES TO A FRIEND, ON RECEIVING SOME IVORY TABLETS.
Accept a tribute of sincere regard,
A simple wreath, and from an humble bard.
But one poor Muse at least my lay shall grace,
Each flattering line benevolently trace;
Mnemosyne her grateful aid shall lend,
My dear, my kind, my own, my father's, friend!
Yes! symbols of thy worth still brightly shine
In memory's deep but treasure-hoarded mine;
And on the tablets of my heart shall write
Each kindly act in characters of light!
