Mr. Francis Browning Owen, of Cloquet, Minn., published a volume of poems twenty years ago, and now offers a second and enlarged edition of his writings under the title of Columbian and other Poems. Spencer's Education in English Training Colleges.—For several years Herbert Spencer's book on Education has been a text-book in the schools of England and Wales which correspond to normal schools in America, and has been very highly appreciated. Mr. J. G. Fitch, the widely known educator, who is one of H. B. M.'s chief inspectors on the training colleges for schoolmistresses, says of this work: "In my conferences with the staff of teachers I have occasionally heard that the work of Mr. Spencer was regarded as incomplete and unsatisfying, that it left out of view some important factors in moral training, and that in particular it exalted scientific instruction at the expense of the 'humanities.'
