The Office and Duty of the King's Allayer, Controllour, and Mafter of the Mint. IT E M, To the Intent that the more Bullion may be brought to the Mint, and the greater Plenty of white Money be made and current within the Realm, for the Eafe and Profit of the Commona'.ty of the fame, it is ordained and ftablifhed, That the Ma- iler of the Mint fhall keep his Allay in the making of white Money according to the Form of his Inden- ture ; (2) and that the fame Mafter receive of every Perfon, that fhall bring any Silver to the Mint, the fame Money at the true Value as it is worth accord- ing to the fame Allay, upon Pain to pay to the Party his double Damages. (3) And alio to the Intent that this Ordinance may the. better and more juftly be. obferved, it is ordained, That the King's Affayer, which is a Perfon indifferent betwixt the Mafter of the Mint and the Merchant, and alfo the Control- ler of the Mint, fhall be prefent when any fuch Bullion -of Silver is brought to the Mint, to the In- tent that the faid Affayer may rightfully -fet the Va- lue of the fame according to the * Law, in cafe of Variance betwixt the Mafter and the Merchant ; and the Controller to controul as well Silver that is brqught to the faid Mint, as carried out of the fame, f every two Days faithfully and indifferently to do their Duty, without taking any Reward other than the Fee which they fhail take of the King, upon Pain to yield double Damages, as afore is faid ; (4) and that the Affayer and Controller be credi- ble, fubftantial, and expert Men, having perfeft Knowledge in the Myftery of Goldfmiths, and of the Mint. (5) And alfo that neither the Mafter of the Mint, nor the Exchanger for the time being, fell, nor caufe to be fold, nor aliene to any other Uie but to the Coin, no Manner of Gold nor of Silver wrought or unwrought, coined or not coined, or Bullion which is brought to the Mint, or to the Exchange, but apply the fame only to the Money, according to the Form of the faid Indenture, upon the Pain contained in the fame Indenture. (6) And that the fame Mafter of the Mint caufe to be ftricken, from time to time, Half-Nobles, Farthings of Gold, Groats, Half-Groats, Pence, Half-Pence, and Farthings, for the Eafe of the People, according to the Tenor of the Indenture made betwixt' the King and him, upon the Pain contained in the fame, fo that the common People may have Recourfe to the Exchange for fmall Gold and white Money, as they reafonably fhall need,' Read^%.
