And whereas many ancient Streets and Paflages within thefa^d Cityiand Liberties thereof, and "; 1' amongft others thole which are hereafter mentioned, were narrow and incommodious for Carriages and ' Pail'engers, and prejudicial to the Trade and Health of the Inhabitants, and are ncceffary to be inlarged, '-as well for the Convenience, as Ornament of the City;' (?■) Be it ena£t:ed by the Authority aforei'aid. That' the Mayor, Aldermen and Commons of the faid City for the Time' being, in Common Council af- What Streets ifembled, Ihall and may, and are hereby impowered and required to inlarge all and every the Streets and may be opened |Places hereafter mentioned, v/here and in fuch Manner as there (hdll be Caufe, by and with the Approba- '""' inl"gea, (tion of his Majefly, and not otherwife : That is to fay, the Street called Fket-J?reet, from the Place where the Greyhound Tavern fi:ood, to Ludgate, and from thence to' St. Paul's Church-yard ; the Street leading from the Ealt-end of St. Paid's Church into Cheapjide; the Street and Paffage at the Eaft-end oi Cheapftde, lead- ing into the Poidtry; the Street and FafTage out of tlie Poultry, leading into the Weft-end of Cornhill, at or near the Place late called the Stocks ; the Street called Bloivhladder-Jireet, leading from the Wefl-end of Cheapfide towards Newgate-Market ; and to inlarge tlie Street and Paffage from thence towards Newgate- Market, by laying the Ground where the Middle-Rotv in the Shamhles there lately flood, into the faid (Street; and in like Manner to inlarge the Paffage. from Newgate-Market towards Nnvgate, by laying .the Ground of the late four Houfes between Warwick-lane End in Newgate-Market, and the late Bell Inn there, into the Street ; and in like Manner to inlarge, as there fhall be Caufe, the h?Me cMed Ave-maria-lanc, leading from Patcr-ncjler-roiv to Ludgate-Jireet ; and the Street or Paffage at the End o^^t. Martin's le 'Grand tow3.rds Blowbladder-Jireet zforeizid ; and alfo the Paffage from St. Magmts Chinch to the-Conduit VmGracious-Jtreet, and the North-end oi Gracious-Jireet ; and alfo Tha-mes-Jlreet, from the XVeft: Corner of 'St. Magnus Church aforefaid, to the Toiver-Dock; and to inlarge, (9/a'-/"/}2i-//r,f^/',- by laying the Middk-Rsw thereinto the Street. And the faid Mayor, Aldermen and Common Council alfo fhall and may by Virtue of this pre- fent Aft, inlarge and make wider any other fuch ftrait and narrow Paffages within the faid City, as are lefs ' than fourteen toot in Breadth; fo as Notice be given to the Owners or Parties interefted in the Ground to be fo taken for the Inlarging thereof, on or before the firfl: Day of j^wy next enfuing : (2) And are and fhall be alfo further enabled by Virtue of this Aft, to make or caufe to be made a new Street leading and ex-; tending from the Guild-hall of the faid City into Cheapfide, the fame to be of fuch Breadth and Widenefs as they fhall judge meet and convenient. And to the find that reafonable Satisfaftion may be given for all fuch Ground. as fhall be taken SaiTsfa'ftloii 60 i and imployed for the Ufes aforefaid ; the Mayor, Aldermen and Common Council fhall' and may treat and be made for ' agree with the Owners and others interefted therein : And if there fhall be any Perfons, Bodies Corporate Ground. or Collegiate, that fhall wilfully refufe to treat and agree, as aforefaid, or through any Difability by Non- ! age. Coverture, or efpecial Entail or other Impediment, cannot ; that in fuch Cafes, the faid Lord Mayor and Court of Aldermen are hereby authorized by Virtue of this Aft to iffue out a Warrant or Warrants to the Sheriffs o^ London, who are hereby required accordingly to impanel and return a Jury before the faid 5 Lord Mayor and Court of Aldermen : (zj 'Which Jury upon their Oaths to be adminifired by the faid Lord Mayor and Court of Aldermen, are to inquire and affefs fuch Damage and Recompence as they fliall judge fit to be awarded to the Owners, and others interefted, according to their feveral and refpeftive Inte- refts and Eftates of and in any fuch Houfes or Ground, or any Part thereof, for their nfpective Interefts and Eftates in the fame, as by the faid Lord Mayor, Aldermen and Commons in Common Council aflembled, fhall be adjudged fit to be converted for the Purpofes aforefaid : (-;) And fuch Verdift of the Jury, and Judg- ment of the faid Lord Mayor and Court of Aldermen thereupon, and the Payment of the Sum or Sums of Money fo awarded or adjudged to the Owners, and others having Eftate or Intereft, or Tender and Refufal thereof, fhall be binding to all Intents and Purpofes againft the faid Parties, their Heirs, Executors, Ad- miniftrators and Afligns, and others claiming any Title or intereft in the {aid Houfes or Ground, and fhall I be a full Authority for the faid Lord Mayor, Aldermen and Commons, to caufe the fame to be converted I SHid ufed for the Purpofes aforefaid. I ' XXVI. And forafmuch as the Houfes now remaining, and to be rebuilt, will receive more or lefs Ad- Houfes which ' vantage in the Value of the Rents, by the Liberty of Air, and free Recourfe for Trade, and other Conve- ftali be bettered ' niencies by'fuch Regulation and Inlargement ;' (2) It is alfo enafted by the Authority aforefaid. Cafe of Refufal or Incapacity, as aforefaid, of the Owners, or others interefted of or in the faid Houfes, to agree and compound with the faid Lord Mayor, Aldermen and Commons for the fame, thereupon a Ju- ry fhall and may be impanelled in Manner and Form aforefaid, to judge and affefs upon the Owners, and others interefted of and in fuch Houfes, fuch competent Sum and Sums of Money, with refpeft to their feveral Interefts, in Confideration of fuch Improvement and Melioration, as in Reafon and good Confcience they fhall think fit: (3) And all Sums of Money th^6 fliall be fo affeffed and raifed as aforefaid, fhall be paid to the Chamberlain of the City of London for the Time being ; who is hereby enabled from Time to R f 2 Time
