Act for finiftiing and adorning the new Chanel, called Saint George's Chapel, in Great Yarmouth in the
County of Norfolk, ami for Enlightening the Streets of the laid Town, by a Duty or Imposition on Coals, Culm and Cinders to be landed and conl'umcd there. P R. Saint George's Chapel in Yarmouth fhall be compleated. Lights placed^ in the Town, and fuch Provifion Minifieis to be licenfed by the Bifhop of Norwich, _ appIL.. Jfes'in the Aft. Alter the Money borrowed is repaid, the Mayor, &c. lliall apply the Overplus for the publick Benefit of the Town. The Town of Yarmouth fhall continue but one Parifh, and the Church- wardens to have the fame Powers relating to the new Chapel as to the Parifh-Church. 'An Act for imploying the Manufacturers and encouraging the Confumption of Raw Silk and Mohair Yarn, by prohibiting the Wearing of Buttons and Button-holes made of Cloth, Serge or other Stuffs. HEREAS by an Act made in the eighth- Year of the Reign of her late Majefty Queen Anne, g Ann, c..6. intituled, An Ail for imploying the Manufacturers by encouraging the Confumption of Raw Silk and '• Mohair Yarn, fuggeftirig therein, amongft other Things, That the Maintenance of many thoufands of ' Men, Women and Children within this KirJgdom of Great Britain depends upon the making of Silk, ' Mohair Yarn and Thread Buttons and Button-holes with the Needle; and that great Numbers of Throw-
- Iters, Twifters, Spinners, Winders, Dyers and others are imployed in preparing Materials of which fuch
' Buttons and Button-holes are made; It was provided, That from and after the five and twentieth Day of ' March one thoufand feven hundred and ten no Buttons or Button-holes made of Cloth, Serge, Drugget, ' Frize, Camblet or any other Stuffs, fhould be made, fet or bound on any Clothes or wearing Garments ' whatfoever, by any Taylor or other Perfon or Perfons whatfoever, on the Forfeitures and Penalties in the ' faid Act contained : And whereas for making the faid recited Act more effectual, another Act was made ' in the fourth Year of his prefent Majefty, intituled, An Acl for making more ejfetlual an Acl made in the 4 Geo. 1. c. 7, 1 ' eighth Year of the Reign of the late j^i/een Anne, intituled,- An Act for imploying the Manufacturers by ' encouraging the Confumption of Raw Silk and Mohair Yarn : And whereas the faid feveral Acts have ' not effectually anfwered the good Ends thereby propofed, and Buttons and Button-holes made of Cloth, ' Serge, Drugget, Frizes, Camblet and other the faid Stuffs, are ftill ufually made, fet and bound on ' Clothes and wearing Garments, to the great Impoverishment of the faid Manufacturers of Needle-work ' Buttons and Button-holes, and other the faid Perfons employed in preparing the Materials thereof, and to ' the exceffive Increafe of the Poor, and, if not prevented, may be the utter Ruin of the faid Manufactu- ' rcrs and many thoufands of your Majefly's Subjects and their Families, whole Livelihoods do intirely de- ' pend thereupon :' For Remedy whereof, may it pleafe your moft Excellent Majefty, that it may be en- 4®" s^&M. nacted ; and be it enacted by the King's moft Excellent Majefty, by and with the Advice and Confent of c ' l< h r the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, in this prefent Parliament affembled, and by the Au- *° •3- i: - 2 - thority of the fame, That from and after the nine and twentieth Day of September which fhall be in After 29 Sept, the Year of our Lord one thoufand feven hundred and twenty-two, it fhall not be lawful for any Perfon or 1722, no Perfon Perfons whatfoever, within the Kingdom of Great Britain, to ufe or wear on any Clothes, Garments or ^M 1 wear on any Apparel whatfoever any Buttons or Button-holes made cf or bound with Cloth, Serge, Drugget, Frize, cluthes L B "" " 5 Camblet, or any Stuffs whereof Clothes or wearing Garments are ufually made ; and that if any Perfon or & j'_ onPenaUv'of Perfons whatfoever, within the Kingdom of Great Britain, fhall ufe or wear any Buttons or Button-holes ^ s. perDozen. made of or bound with Cloth, Serge, Drugget, Frize, Camblet or other Stuffs as aforefaid, fuch Perfon or Perfons being thereof lawfully convicted by the Oath of one or more credible Witnefs or Witneffes, or by Confeffion of the Party, in Manner as is herein after mentioned, fhall forfeit for every Dozen of fuch But- tons or Button-holes fo ufed or worn the Sum of forty Shillings, or in Proportion for every leffer Quantity of fuch Buttons and Button holes ; to be recovered and diftributed as herein after is provided. II. And for the more eafy Conviction of Offenders againft this Act, and for the more eafy Recovery of Conviaion be- the Penalties and Forfeitures aforefaid, Be it further enacted by the Authority aforefaid, That it fhall and f ° re °" e J u * may be lawful to and any one or more of his Majefty 's Juftices of the Peace of the County, Riding, City, ll ' ce ° 1Vlce Town or Place where any Offence fhall be committed againft this Act, or where fuch Offender fhall in- habit, and fuch Juftice or Juftices are hereby required and enjoined, upon any Complaint or Information upon the Oath of one or more credible Perfon or Perfons (which Oath fuch Juftice or Juftices is and are hereby impowered and required to adminifter) to fummon the Party or Parties accufed," and upon his, her or their Appearance or Contempt to proceed to the Examination of the Matter of Pa£t, and upon due Proof made, either by the Confeffion of the Party, or the Oath or Oaths of one or more credible Perfon or
