152 Btf/HADARAiVYAKA-UPANISHAD.
FOURTH ADHYAYA.
First BrAhmajva.
1. When Ganaka Vaideha was sitting (to give audience), Y&^avalkya approached, and Ganaka Vaideha said : ' Y&£$avalkya, for what object did you come, wishing for cattle, or for subtle ques- tions 1 ?'
Yd^avalkya replied : ' For both, Your Majesty ;
2. 'Let us hear what anybody may have told you/ Ganaka Vaideha replied : i £itvan .Sailini told me
that speech (y&k) is Brahman/
Yi^avalkya said : * As one who had (the benefit of a good) father, mother, and teacher might tell, so did .Sailini 2 tell you, that speech is Brahman; for what is the use of a dumb person ? But did he tell you the body (&yatana) and the resting-place (pra- tish/M) of that Brahman ?'
kanaka Vaideha said : ' He did not tell me/
Y&^avalkya said : ' Your Majesty, this (Brahman) stands on one leg only 3 /
Ganaka Vaideha said: 'Then tell me, Y&^avalkya/
1 A»v-anta, formed like Sutr&nta, Siddhanta, and probably Ve- d&nta, means subtle questions.
2 Roer and Poley give here .Sailina; Weber also (pp. 1080 and 1 081) has twice Sailina (*Silinasy&patyam).
8 This seems to mean that (-ritvan's explanation of Brahman is lame or imperfect, because there are four p&das of that Brahman, and he taught one only. The other three are its body, its place, and its form of worship (pra^wetfyam upanishad brahma»&r £atur- tha£ p&daA). See also Maitr. Up. VII, p. 221.
