HE first inhabitants of Shetland, who were they, and whence did they come? are questions wrapped in obscurity; and although much has been said and written on the subject, it has never been advanced beyond the stage of conjecture. It is generally admitted that the Picts were the first inhabitants of Shetland, and that they came from Scotland, but from what region they migrated thither is a subject of uncertainty.
