display their skill and bravery in, for the amusement and amazement of those who have no more to do, and no more sense than to gaze at men, who might be more wisely employed. Yes, and it has taught men and Christian men, the art of hating and biting one another scientifically and systematically. So much for construction and expediency.
I object to abolitionism, in the second place, because it is intimately connected with, and leads to amalgamation. It is now proposed to give the blacks all civil and political rights and privileges: but there are certain social rights and privileges which are essential to perfect freedom, and which men value as highly as they do the others: and by giving to the blacks the former, is giving them a right to demand the latter, which is, to sit with you at your tables, to lodge with you in your chambers, to mingle and participate in your social amusements, and to take your daughters and sisters to be their wives, and give their daughters to be your wives. And how can you withhold from them those privileges which you give to all others? If you emancipate, you must also amalgamate. You must go the whole extent of the principle of liberty and privilege, if you begin—otherwise you compromise the matter, and deceive the blacks.
Amalgamation must necessarily follow from the doctrines of the abolitionists, and this we know that some of them contend for—and ask where is the impropriety of amalgamation? In reply to this we contend that there is something more than prejudice of color, absurd custom, and arbitrary taste against it. That there is a moral impropriety in the amalgamation of the two colors or races, even if that amalgamation were made legal, the following facts will sufficiently prove. It is a well established fact, that the offspring of white and black parents, is a degenerate offspring, physically and mentally inferior to either of their parents; and the worthlessness of mulattoes has become a proverb where they are known; and their offspring again is still more degenerate, being generally subject to scurvy and other loathsome diseases; and exhibiting an almost total absence of mental and physical energies. And here nature seems to interpose her insuperable law, for the female of the third remove from white and black parents, called the quadroon, is rarely known to have offspring to white men. The degeneracy, then, of the offspring from amalgamation is downward and rapid, until that offspring ceases: and thus God, by signs and evidences not to be mistaken, has forbid the amalgamation of the two races.
I object to it, in the third place, because it is founded upon, and tends to agrarianism. That morbid and sentimental philanthropy which, at a distance, and in imagination, contemplates the difference between the slave and his master, may soon turn its compassionate eye to more proximate inequalities of life, rank and riches; and demand that the millionaires and others of less
