And he?—Before him burned the steadfast light
Their hands had held to guide his way aright;
By it he reached the summit of his aim,
The goal of his endeavor, and became
The idol of his day. But they who sound
His fame remember not the lives uncrowned
On which he stands—the narrow, obscure ways
Two women trod to wreathe his name with praise.
