Thy heart was as a river, etc.: Cooke explained the meaning of these obscure lines as follows: "Florence did not want the capacity to love, but directed her love to no object. Her passions went flowing like a lost river." His next sentence in this explanation is an interesting example of the influence Byron exerted over these early Southern lyrists. " Byron has a kindred idea expressed by the same figure. Per haps his verses were in my mind when I wrote my own:
