Revenue and Expenditure.
The revenue of Turkey is chiefly derived from taxes of three denominations — the Verghi, the Aashr, and the Roussotvmiat. The Verghi, or poll-tax, is a tax on the whole population, paid at a fixed rate for each house or family; the second tax, the Aashr, or tithe, is a tax of ten per cent, upon the produce of cultivation ; and the third tax, the Roussoumiat, is revenue derived from the farming of the customs, from taxes on food, and from the rent of crown lands.
The revenue and expenditure of the Government for each of the two years, ending March 30, 1864 and 1865 — years 1270 and 1280 of the Turkish era — were officially returned as follows : —
