The following table shows the population at the censuses of 1880 and 1890, and the area and population per square mile in 1890 of the States and Territories arranged by geographical divisions. The dates indicate the year in which the Constitu- tion was ratified by each of the thirteen original States (these being indicated by a *), and the year of the admission of each of the other States into the Union :
