This aggregate is exclusive of Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, in which, if any public land remains, it consists of a few small isolated tracts. Alaska, which contains about 577,390 square miles, or 369,529,600 acres of land, mostly unsurveyed and unappropriated, is also excluded. " Area reserved " means lands that have been disposed of for settlement or for other purposes under the public land laws of the United States. The immense extent of land, forming part of the United States, as yet uninhabited and uncultivated, is held to be national property, at the disposal of Congress and the execu- tive of the Kepublic.
