Preface

a scrupulously exact and literal translation, and tried to retain as far as possible the rhythm of the original. I have refrained from the use of rhyme, a restriction which necessarily hampers literalness and gives an air of artificiality.

To Lilian E. Knowles for many valuable suggestions, to Miss Agnes DeLano and Donald Goodchild for assisting me in the revision of the manuscript, and to Miss Suzanne Webb for the pencil sketch of Akiko Yosano after the Miroir, I wish to express my deep indebtedness.
