The year theoretically begins at the moment when the sun enters the sign Meiktha, but as the year is slightly longer than the mean sidereal year, the first point of Meiktha (the zero of longitude) is really moving among the stars away from the equinox, faster than the real precession. The rate of precession of the equinoxes is about 50″ per annum; the rate at which the first point of Meiktha diverges from the equinox is about 59″ per annum.
