(*>) It waa supposed that thus only he waa induced to retire to make room for Tindul, then Solicitor General. A full (but perhapa aomewhat prejudiced) account of the matter is in Carpenter's Peerage. There certainly seems to have been some motive (other thau merit) for the conferring of this Peerage. {^) This office he obtained and held for many years, the' he had retired (see note '* c above) with a pension granted under an Act which required that he ahould be disabled by permanent bodily infirmity from the due execution of his office. " Very early in his career he had the good fortune to extract a flattering eulogium from Lord Kenyon ... he consequently soon received ample employment. Tho' superficial in legal knowledge, his readiness of comprehension and fluency of speech . . . and hia increase of business wnrranted him in accepting the degree of the Coif in 1800. Hiit servicea were in great requisition . . . and hesomtimes appeared on important criminal trials." From his " hasty and questionsble opinions " and from hia " summing up so much on one side," he was nicknamed the Judge- Advocate, [Foes's Judges'], A sarcastic alluBion to his judicial abilities is made by the well known Mr. Chitty, who, in one of his law indexes, placea " Brst, Mr. Justice, his great mind " ; the reference to which being that, when, during a trial, at which he presided, a considerable disturbance took place, he said that he had " a great mind " to order the Court to be cleared.
