The fsmily of Wellesle^, however, from whom the Duke descended in the female linCi is traditionally said ' to derire their existing name from a locality called Welesley, in Somersetshire ' [Liower's Pairon, BrU.^ and it appears that ttmn. Hen. I., one *A?enant de Wellesley was King's Serjeant of all the country lying Bast of the river Peret, in Somersetshire ' [Lynch*s Feudal Baronia [I.], pp. 95-103, where is a good acoouut of the Irish family]. In that county also [see Oollinsou's SomartdX, the name occurs in the hundred of Wells, aud one Philip de Wellesleigh, who d, s.p.m. between 1850 and 1395, was Lord of the Manors of Mettlecombe, Wheathill and Itadstock. As early, however, as 8 Nov. 1230, Walleran de Wellesley appears in Ireland, aud was Uie lineal ancestor of Qarret Wellesley, of Danffau and Momington, who d, s.p. 1728. He, being maternal grandson of Dudley Colley {d, 1674), left his esUtes to his first cousin, Itichard Colley (after, wards 1st Baron Mornington [1 1), another grandson, and then heir male of the said Dudley. This Richard Colley had, however, a remote descent from Welles- ley or Wesley.
