William Howard shortly oefore Nov. 1616; was " Capt. of the Lord Protector's Body Guard " and Col. of a Reg. of Horse ; M.P. for Westmorland, 1653, for Cumberland 1654, 1656 and 1660. He is Bald to have received an hereditary Peerage( h ) from the Protector, fay having been cr. 20 July 1657, BAROJ5 GILSLAKU and VISCOUNT HOWARD OF MORPETH ; anyhow he was sum. 10 Dee. 1657. to Cromwell's "House of Lords" where ho is described as "Lord Viscount Howard. Being, at the time of the Restoration, M.P. for Cumberland and Governor of Carlisle, he promoted the cause of the King, for which service he was, in dune 1660, made P.O., ami in Oct. 1660, Lord Lieut,, of Cumberland and Westmorland ; and was, on 30 April ] 861 (no recognition being taken of his Croinwellian honours) cr. Lord Lieut, of Cumberland, 1689-92. He m. (lie. at Vic. By his marriage with Elizabeth, da. of Thomas and sister and coheir of George (Dac'Rk) respectively Lords Dacrk dk Giu.esland, he obtained the Castle of Naworth and other estates of the Dacre family.
