On 29 May 1770 he was cr. LORD DAWSON, BARON DAWSON OF DAWSON COURT, in the Queen's county [I.] and in 1776 wascr. Viscount Carlow [I.] as abovenamed. He m. 8 Dee. 1737, Mary, lister (whose issue became h.) to Joseph, 1st Earl of Dorchester. 1st da. of Joseph Damer of Came, Dorset, by Mary, da. of John Churchill of Henbury, in that co. Shed. 2 June 176!>, and was bur. in St. George's Chapel, Dublin. He d. 22 Aug. 1779, in his 67th year, and was bur. at New Church, in Coolbauagher, Queen's comity. LORD CARLYLK OF TORTHORWALD [S.] He was Ch. Justice [&], south of the Forth, and, in 1477 was on an Embassy to France. He m. firstly Janet. He )«. secondly before 4 Feb. 1492/3, Margaret, widow of Sir Edward Maxwell of Monreith, da. of (— ) Douglas. He was living 12 Jany. 1500/1, but d. before 11 May 1503, when sezin of certain lands was granted to William, Lord Carlyle. His widow was liviug 22 Dec. 1509. [John- Carlvle, stilled, Master of Carlyle, 1st s. and h. ap., by first wife. He d. v.p. before Oct. 1477.] II. 1503? :?. William (Carlyle), Lord Carlyle of Tortuor- yyald [S.], grandson and h. being s. and h. of Johu Carlyle, styled Master of Carlyle, aboveuamcd. He was Knighted, 29 Jany. 1487/8. He had a charter of the Barunv of Carlyle, on his grandfather's resignation, 12 Jany. 1500/1. He m., before 10 Oct. v MS7, Janet, da. of Robert (Maxwell), 2d Lord Maxwell [S.]. ill. 19201 9. James (Carlylk), Lord Carlyle of Torthorwald [8], 8. and h. lb- m. Janet, da. of Sir James Scrimgeovr of Dudhope, Constable of Dundee, lied. s.p. before 15 Jan. 1525/6. His widow was living 27 Dec. 1529. ( !1 ) He is designed " Lord Carlile " in the Crown accounts of Galloway, July 1474, and in Nov. 1475 he. sits in Pari, as such. See " Acts of Pari " [S.J, vol. ii, p. 108, overlooked (apparently) in " Hewlett," p. 34, where the date of his so sitting is given as 1 July 1476.
