After a lung residence abroad (1 746- 54) be returned to Ireland, taking bis seat in tbe House of Lords [I.] 7 Oct. 1754 when he began to take part in public affairs. Gov. of co. Armagh and P.C. [I.] 1754 ; LL.D. (Dublin) 15 July 1754. He commanded the levies for the defence of Belfast against the French in 1760. On 23 Dec. 1763 he was cr. EARL OF CHARLEMONT/- 1 ) co. Armagh [I.]. Thro' his influence, chiefly, the bill of Mr. Flood, limiting the duration of Pari, to 8 years, was passed in 1 76S in the House of Lords [I.] His influence in politics was very great, and in July 1 7S0 he was chosen Commander in Chief of the (then newly embodied) Irish Volunteers', which post he held till their dissolution. He was President of the Volunteer Convention at Dublin (the last summoned) in Nov. 1783, and his personal influence probably prevented violence between that, assembly and the Pari. K.P. 5 Feb. 1783, being one of the 15 orig. Knights of that " most illustrious order."( b ) President of the Boyal Irish Academy on its establishment in 1785. F.R.S. and F.S.A., London, &e. A firm Whig and a great opponent of the Irish Union, its near approach is thought to have hastened the death of this well-meaning Patriot.(°) He was P.C. [I.] to George III [1783 ?] as well as to George II. He m. 2 July 1768, Mary, da. of Thomas Hickman of BrickhiU, co. Clare. He d. 4 Aug. 1799 at his house in Dublin. Will or Admou. 1816.
