A warrant lyes ready to paase for creating the Lord Shrews- bury, a Duke ; the Lord Carmarthen, Duke of Pontefract ; Lord Bedford, Duke of Bedford ; Lord Devonshire, Duke of Newcastle ; Lord Clare, Duke of Clarence, &c. See Luttrell's " Diary." This wholesale creation of Dukes took place accordingly, the titles selected being [1] Shrewsbury, by the Earl of Shrewsbury ; [2] Leeds (not Pontefract), by the Marquess of Carmarthen ; [3] Bedford, by the Earl of Bedford ; [4] Devonshire (not Newcastle, the title of a Dukedom, but 3 years previously extinct in the Cavendish family, the new grantee being heir male of the last Duke), by the Earl of Devonshire, and [5] Newcastle (not Clarence), by the Earl of Clare, whose wife was da. and coheir of the last Duke of Newcastle. It is worthy of note that, in the Bhort space of six years, William III created no less than nine Dukep, riz. : [1] Cumberland {Prince George of Denmark) ; [2] Bolton {Powlct', Marijueis of Winchester) ; [3] Scombergh (de Schombergh) ; [4] Gloucester (Prince William) ; [5] Shrewsbury (Talbot) ; [6] Leeds (Osborne) ; [7] Bedford (Russell) ; [8] Devonshire (Cavendish) ; and [9] Newcastle (Hoiks). ( b ) He appears to have chiefly resided there, leaving his paternal manaion at Haughton to become ruinous. His nephew, and successor as to the Holies estates, (Thomas, Duke of Newcastle) enlarged Clumber (which, previously, was 'hut a Lodge! and made it the family house. See an interesting account of " Haughton " in ' The Topographer," 1789, Vol. i, p. 142-154. ( c ) In " Macky's and Burnet's characters," with Dean Swift's remarks thereon in italics, it is said of him that " he is a black, ruddy complexioned man, near 60 years old. He hath the best eBtatein England, and employe most of his time in improving it ; is very covetous, yet makes a great figure in Yorkshire, is firm for the constitution of his country, and hath only one da. who will be the richest heiress in Europe, now Countess of Oxford, cheated by her Father." [See, as to this, Note " d," infra.] ( d ) The_ estates of the Cavendish family, with lands of about £5,000 a year in Staffordshire, Yorkshire, and Northumberland, he devised to his only da. who, as heir- at-law, had lands, worth £100,000, purchased since his will, besides £20,000 her portion under his mar. settl. This Lady m. Edward (Harley), 2nd Earl of Oxford, whose da. and h. m. William (Bentinck), 2nd Duke of Portland, conveying Welbeek Abbey and the other estates to the family of Bentinck. The estates of the Holies family were devised by the Duke, in 1707, to his nephew, Thomas I'elham, cr. Earl of Clare, &c, and finally Dr.ke of Newcastle.
