Norfolk, &c, s. and h. of Roger Fitz- John, Lord of the same, sue. his Father, about I 1°90 Whitsuntide 1249, being then very young. He distinguished himself in the war with Scotland, 129-1-98, being (with his son), at the siege of Caerlaverock. He was sum. to Pari, as a Baron (LORD FITZ- ROGBR) by writs 2 Nov. (129")) 23 Ed. I, directed " Rob' to, fil. Ror/i," down to 26 Oct. (1 HO!)) 3 Ed. II. He was one of the Barons who, in 1301, subscribed the celebrated letter to Tope Boniface VIII, being therein described as " Roger Fitz Roger, Lord of Wavering." He m. Margery DE la Zoiche. He d. 1310. II. 1299, ,?. Joun de Claveiiing (who had assumed that surname), s. and h., aged 40 at the time of his Father's death, who having distinguished himself in the French and Scotch wars, had been 1332. sum. to Pari, v.p., as a Baron (LORD CLAVERING) by writs, 16 July (1299) 27 Ed. I directed " Joh'i dc Wavering ," down to 20 Nov. (1331) fj Ed. Ill- Subject to his own life (and hi the case of the Lord- ship uf Clavering, to that of his br. Edmund Clavering) he alienated nearly all the estates of the fauiily( !1 ). He m. (at tile age of 12) in 1278, Hawise, da. of Robert de TliasniT. He d. s.p.in. at Aynhoe, co. Northampton, 1332, and was bur. at Langley Norfolk. After this date the Barony, if an hereditary one ever existed, is no more beard of. His widow d. (19 Ed. III.) 1344-45. [Eva, da. and h. who was aged 40 (or above) at her mother's death (Hi Kd. Ill) 1345-46, m. firstly (when very young) Thomas Audley (b. and h. ap. of Nicholas Audley), who d. v.p. and s.p. 1307, aged 18. She m. secondly before 1309 Sir Thomas Uffbrd, slain 1314. She m. thirdly Sir James Audley (cousin of her first husband) by whom she Wiis mother of the celebrated Sir James Audley, K G., the hero of Poictiers. CLENAWLEY see GLENAWLEY. ( a ) In pursuance whereof, at his death, Warkworth, &c., co. Northumberland, passed to the Crown and was granted by Edward III to the family of Percy, while the lands at Aynhoe, co. Northampton, at Horsford, co. Cone.," Vol. i, p. 155) that " it may be considered that, Warkworth' being the Barony, from the tenure whereof the writs of Bummons to Robert Fitz Roger were first directed to him, they were writs of service, and not of created nobility descendible in blood, undivested [query ! " when divested "] of the land territory ; in which respect, Warkworth ceasing to be possessed by his heirs, the Barony became extinguished ; a point which may apply to many other ancient Baronies, whereof the tenants in rapitc who were first sum. had not the like summons continued to their descendants." Warkworth was held in eapitc by Clavering's ancestor in 1 1 6(i (l iber Niger), while Clavering was only held of the King nt dc Iwnorc, and was derived (with Aynho, an under-tenancy) from his ancestress, Alice of Essex.
