Father, in whose Irish Viseountey, 18 Jan. 1662/3, and in whose English Barony, 16 July 1689 he had been sum., v.p., to the respective House of Lords in both those Kiugdonis.( c ) On his mother's death, in 1691. he became, as her s. and h., dc jure, Lord Clifford £ [1628]. Clifford [162S], s. ami h., was, on 20 Nov. 1094,('!) sum. to Pari. HI, as Lord Cliflord of Lanesborough [1644]. On 15 Jany. 1697/8, he J Sue. his grandfather above-named as Earl of Burlington, and also as Earl of Cork [I.] He d. 9 Feb. 1703/4. V. 1 5 awl 4- Richard (Boyle), Earl of Burlington, 1 1704, Baron Clifford of Lanksiiorough, and i/e jure, Lord Clifford f to [1628] also Earl of Cork, &c. [I.], only s. aud h., b. 25 April 1694. IV, 1753. On 25 May 1737, his claim to the Barony of Clifford, cr. by tho writ J (issued in error) of 17 Feb. 1628, was allowed to him as h. to his great grandmother, the Countess of Burlington, da. and sole h. of Henry Cliflord (afterwards Earl of Cumberland), who, in 1628, was sum. as Lord Clifford. He d. s.p.m. 3 Dec. 1753, when his Irish dignities devolved on his cousin and h. male (see " Cork," Earldom of [L], cr. 1620), while the Earldom of Burlington [1664], and the Itarony of Clifford of Lanesborough [1611], became extinct, but the Barony of Clifford [1628] devolved as under :— (") The right to this Barony which had been vested in his uncle, George, the 3rd Enrl of Cumberland had passed on that Earl's death, s.p.m. s., in 1605 to Aune, the da. and h. general, the Earldom passing to Francis, br. and h. male, of the deceased. ( e ) He is probably the onh/ instance of an eldest son of a Peer beinc summoned v.p. in his Father's peerages to the House of Lords in the two respective Kingdoms of England and Ireland. ( J ) " A debate arising whether Charles, Lord Clifford, s. and h. of Charles, late Lord Clifford of Launsburg, deed., who was called by writ to Pari, in the lifetime of his Father, the present Earl of Burlington, hath right to sit in Pari.," the House " was of opinion that the said Charles, now [1694] Lord Clifford, hath a right to a writ of summons to Pari.," tho' on the abstract question which had previously been put to them of a similar case, their answer was that they "find no precedent."
