VIII (1530-31) he signed the provisional denial of the Pope's supremacy in case of his not consenting to the King's divorce. He m. Anne,( b ) da. of William (Dacrk), Lord Daork de GilleslanD. He d. 1538. young men, her father, Alexander Pophara, being br. of Frances, Viscountess Conway abovenamed, the Earl's mother. (*) This was probably owing to liis father, Speaker of the House of Commons, 1661- 78, who exercised great influence till his death in 1708, and who, being in remainder to the Dukedom of Somerset, is said to have declined a peerage for himself. Bp. Burnet states that the Ministry prevailed on the Queen at this period, for the sake of having a clear majority in the next session, " to create four new Peers who had been the violentest of the whole party, Finou, Gower, Granville, and young Seymour," while " Hervey, though of the other side, was at the same time made a Baron by private favour." See, " ante," p. 27, note " a," sub. " Bristol." The " violence " of young Seymour, who was not even in Pari., must, however, have been of small moment. Ac- cording to the generally received account this lady waa the second wife (about 1555) of Henry (Clifford), Earl of Cumberland, who d. 1570. This however is not absolutely inconsistent with the Conyers' match, though, if both took place, this Anne Dacre the mother of the 3rd Lord Conyers must have married (as her 2nd husband) the brother (the 2nd Earl of Cumberland) of that Lord's wife.
