On his accession to the Peerage, he joined the Whig party and, under the Rockingham and Grafton Ministry, was Lord of the Bedchamber and aide- de-camp to the King, 1765-69, and Ch. Justice in Eyre, Col. 33rd Foot, 1766, becoming, subsequently, Major-Gen., General, 1793. Vice-Treasurer of Ireland, 1 769-70 ; P.O., 1770 ; Constable of tho Tower, &c, 1770 to Feb.. 1784, and again Nov. 1784, till his death.
