His widow was living as late as 1522. [Alexander Lindsay, Master of Crawford, styled Lord Lindsay, s. and h. ap. by 1st wife, had charter of lands, with the Sheriff of Aberdeen, 1474, and sat in Pari., March 1431/2. He hi. Janet, 2nd da. of George (Gordon), 2nd Eahl ok Huntly [S.] Having Jed "a wild and ungovernable life," taking part against his father and quarrelling with his brother, he d. v.p. and s.p. 16 Sep. 1489, being " smothered in his bed at Inverqueich, and, as was thought, not without knowledge of his wife," and, apparently, of his brother also. His widow m. before Feb. 1492/3, Patrick (Gray), 4th Loud Gray [S.], who d. April 1541. She m. thirdly', — )'Haluer- ston of Southwood.] VI. 1195. 6. Joiin (Lindsay), Earl of Crawford [£}.], 2nd but 1st surv. s. and h. by 1st wife ; retoured, h. to his br. 15 June 1493, sat in Pari. 13 March 1503/4, and was one of the 4 Governors from Tay to Shetland, 1503. " His career was not a happy one — his extravagance was great ; he alienated lands held in capite of the Crown, &c, the charge of fratricide huug over his head, and his children all died in infancy." He m. before Aug. 1493, Mariota, da. of Alexander (Home), 2nd Lord Home [S.], by Nichola, da. of George Ker. He d. s.p. legit.( ,J ) 9 Sep. 1513, being slain, with his King, at the battle of Flodden, but bur. at Dundee. His widow was living 10 April 1527. VII. 1513, 7. Alexander (Lindsay), Earl of Crawford [S.], uncle and h. male, being yr. s. of the 4th Earl. He Wat of Auchtcrmonzie, Knt , Oh. Dep. of Forfar, 14S3. Me, in 1513, Was one of 4 Councillors appointed for the Queen Regent, and in 1515 was High Justiciary north of the Forth. He m. Margaret, da. of (— ) Campbell, of Ardkinglass. He </. at Finhaven, May 1517, aged about 74, and was bur. at Dundee. VEIL 1517. & David (Lindsay), Earl of Crawford [8.1, s. and h. served h., 18 July 1517. He was deprived by the King of largeestates in the Lowlands, as also of lauds in the Hebrides. He m. firstly Elizabeth, da. of William (Hay), 5th Earl of Erroll [S.], by his 2nd wife, Elizabeth, da. of George (Leslie), 1st Eahl ok Hotiies [S.] He m. secondly, before 1526, Margaret.da. of ( — ) Lundy, of Lundy. By charter, confirmed by the King (after resignation), he, 16 Oct. 1541, conveyed the Earldom (subject to his own life interest) to his cousiuaud (failing his own issue) next heir male, David Lindsay of Edzell, with rem. to his heirs in strict tail male. He d. at Cairnie Castle, in Anehterraonzie, before 10 Oct. 1542. His widow m., as his 4th wife, George (Leslie), Eaul ok Rothes, who d- 28 Nov. 1558. [Alexander Lindsay, Master of Crawford, usually known as " the wicked Master," 1st and only surv. s. and h. ap. by 1st wife. " He had been put in fee of the Earldom by his father, and the Barony of Gleuesk had been assigned to him." As early, however, as 1526, his father had claimed protection against him from "bodily harm, and ou 16 Feb. 1530/1, he was arraigned at Dundee, found guilty of constructive parracide and various other crimes, and condemned to death. By this WAS effected " the legal exclusion of himself and his posterity from succession to tho estates and honours of Crawford, blotting them out as if they had never oxisted." In this exclusion he acquiesced, renouncing all his right 30 March 1537. He m. Jean,( c ) da. of Henry (Sinclair), Lord Sinclair [Sj He was killed v.p. in a broil by a cobbler of Dundee, probably about Nov. 1512, but certainly before 12 Dec. 1542. something like consecutive order, from, probably, loose or mutilated leaves iu the original, and it is quite possible that among these, a single leaf or fragment may have got in of a muck earlier record, and that the Indexer, finding no clue to the date, inserted it where he found it. {Ex. inform. G. Burnett, Lyon.) It is thus not clear whether the date iu this case may not have been as early as (or earlier than) 1484, and thus shew the Countess' death before the Earl's remarriage. (") Her cousin was made Ca.pt. of Crawford Castle, hereditarily, by which designa- tion this branch of Qarmuikatl was afterwards knowu. ( b ) Of his two sisters the eldest (or her issue) was the heir of line, vi:. : (1) Mar- garet, who in. John Blair, of Balmyle, and had issue ; the other (2) Elizabeth, or Isabel, m. David Lyon, of Braikie, and had issue. (<=) This Janet is styled " Countess of Crawford " in family deeds.
