He m. secondly, iu 1552 or 1553, at Kirk Oswald, Ann [widow, apparently, of Christopher (Conykrs) Lord C'onyersC')] da. of William (Daore), Lord Daore de Gillesland. He d. 8 Jan. 1569/70, at Brougham Castle. His widow d. at Skipton Castle 1581. Both were bur. at Skipton. III. 1570. 3. George (Clifford), Earl of Cumberland, Loud Clifford, and Hereditary Sheriff of Westmorland, s. and h. by 2nd wife, b. 8 Aug. 1558 at Brougham Castle ; ed. at Peter House and Trinity Coll., Cam- bridge, 1571-74; M.A., 157G; was a great mathematical! and navigator, performing nine voyages as commander or captain, mostly to the West Indies, taking "the strong town of Rail iu the Zorrous islands in 1589 and in his last viage (1598) the strong forte of I'outereco."( c ) He was Councillor of the North, 1582 and iu Feb. 15S7, was on the Commission for the execution of Mary Queen of Scots ; el. K.G-. 23 April, and inst. 19 June 1592 ; Hon. M.A. Oxford, 27 Sep. 1592 ; High Steward of Kuaresborough, 1597; Admiral of a Fleet, 1598 , Lieut. Gen. in London, 1599 and 1601 ; Col. of the London trained bands, 1599 ; High Steward of the Honour of Grafton and Ranger of Salcey Forest, 1 002 ; B.C., 1603 ; Warden of the West and Middle Marshes, Gov. of Carlisle and Ilarbottle Castle, Custos Rot. of co. Cumber- land, &c., 1603. He m. 24 June 1577, at St. Mary Overies, Southwark, Margaret, 3rd and yst. da. of Francis (Russell), 2nd Earl of Bedford, by Margaret, sister of Oliver, 1st Baron Ss. John of Blbtso, da. of Sir John ST. John. He d. s.p.m.s., of the blood flux, 30 Oct. 1605, aged 47, at the Duchy House, Midx., and was bur. at Skipton, being £1,000 in debt, and having greatly wasted the family estate. By his will, dat. 19 Oct. 1605, he left his lauds to his brother in tail male, with a final rem. to his da. His widow, who was b. 7 July 1560 at her father's house in Exeter, distinguished herself by her resolute efforts to obtain for her daughter the family estates.( d ) She d. 24 May 1616 at Brougham Castle (in the Chamber where her husband was born) and was bur. at St. Laurence, Appleby. M.I. Will dat. 19 Oct. 1605, pr. 7 July 1606. On his death the right to the Barony of Clifford passed to his da. and heir general (see that title), but the Earldom to the heir male, as under. York, 1600 ; M.P. for co. York, 1604-05 ; K.B., 6 Jan. 1604/5, at the creation of the Duke of York. Lord-Lieut, of Cumberland, Northumberland, Westmorland and Newcastle- ou-Tyne, 1611-39. In 1618 he entertained the King at Brougham Castle. He m. soon after March 1589, Grizeld, Dow-Baroness Abergavenny, da. of Thomas (») Her only surv. child Margaret, m. 1555 Henry (Stanley), Earl of Derby, 1572-93. Dr. Whitaker mentions that " there are families in Craven who are said to derive their origin from the low amours of the 3rd Earl."
