Ho adhered to tho party of James II. ill the Revolution of 1688, and, having been captured by the prevailing party, was imprisoned in Stirling Castle, where he d. num. in 1695. [S.], tho' in no way connected with any lit the previous Earls of that race. He was B. and h. of Henry (Euskine), 3d LORD Cardross [S.], b. and b> of David, 2d Lonu Cardross [S.], s. and h. of Henry ( Euskine), a yr. s. of John (Euskine) Ears ok Mah, c>: Loud Cardross [S.] ; which Henry Erskine, (who was next in rem. to the Barony of Cardross, and, as such " Fiar" of Cardross), (/. v.p. in 1628, being next yst. br. of James Erskine, jure marili Karl ok Bithan, abovenamed, the grandfather of the late Earl. This David Erskine was h. 1672, and sue. his Father, as Loud Cardross [S.], 21 May 1693, taking his seat 2 June following. l'.C. 1007, and subsequently to Queen Anne. In 1698 his right to the Earldom of Buchan was acknowledged by Parl.(') In consequence of his opposition to the Union [S.] he was removed from all his offices, but being a zealous partisan of the Hanoverian succession, he was made by George I., Lord Lieut, of co. Admon. 12 Dec. 1745 to a creditor. His widow d. s.p. in St. St. Geo. Han. sip 14 and was bur. 21 May 1763 at Hampstead afsd. Will dat. 2 Nov. 176], pr. 2 June 1763. Henry David (Erskine), Earl of Buchan, &c. [S.], 3rd but 1st surv. s. and h. by 1st wife, b. 17 April 1710. He m. 31 Jan. 1739, Agnes, 2nd da. of Sir James Steuart, Bart., Sol. Gen. [S.], by Ann, da. of Sir Hew. Daluymkle, Bart. He (/. at Walcot, Somerset, 1 Dec. 1767 in his 56th year, and was bur. 21st at Holyrood House Abbey. David Steuart (Erskine), Earl of Buchan, &c. [& 2nd but 1st surv. b. and h., 1 June 1742, O.S. He was well- known as a Patron of Literature. He m. 15 Oct. 1771, at Aberdeen, Margaret, da. of (his cousin) William Eraser, of Fraserfield, co. Aberdeen. She d. 12 May 1819. He d. s.p. 19 April 1829. (') It had been contested by " Eraser of Inverallochie," the h. of line, beings, and h. of Margaret, eldest sister of the late Earl. ( k ) On 27 Sep. a lie. was issued from the Eac. office, for David, Earl of Buchan, aged about 26, Bachelor, to marry Lady Olympiu Roberts, of Chelsea, aged 25, spinster, at St. Margaret's, Westm. No such marriage took place there, or, apparently, elsewhere. The lady was probably da. of John (Koberts), Earl of Kaduor, who d. 1685. (') See "Douglas," vol i, p. 277.
