BUCKINGHAM. 63 If. 1377. 1. Thomas (Plantagen-et), surnanied "of" Woodstock " yst. s. of Edward IH., was, on la .Inly 1377, at the coronation of Richard II., cr. EARL OF BUCKINGHAM. This creation was subsequently confirmed by a Royal charter, with consent of Pari., the limitation being to the grantee and his heirs. On 6 Aug. 188-5 he was was cr. DUKE of Gloucester. He was murder od 8 Sept. 1397. V. 1397 2. Humphrey (Plaxtagenet), Duke of Glou- cester and Karl OF Buckixoiiam, only s. and h. The title of "Gloucester" having been conferred, a few days after the murder of his Father, on Thomas Le Despencer, he appears to have been known (only) as Earl ok Buckingham. Iti Oct. 1438, considered as EARL OF BUCK- INGHAM. (•') He was in 1420 <r. Count of Perehe in Normandy, and was on 14 Sep. (1444) 28 Henry VI. cr. DUKE OF BUCK- INGHAM.^) P.O. 1424 ; KG. 22 April 1429. He served several years in France ; was Lieut. Gen. of Normandy, 1430-32 : Captain of Calais and Lieut, of the Marches. 1 1 12, and was raised to a Dukedom, as above, 1444 ; Ambassador to France, I I lti. On 22 May 1447, he had a grant of special precedence given him " before all Pukes who might thenceforward be created, excepting descendants of the King's body."( e ) Warden of the Cimjua Porta and Constable of Dover and Queenborough Castles, 1450. He was a zealous Lancastrian, in which cause he was slain at the battle of Northampton. He m. Ann, da. of Ralph (Nevill), 1st Earl of Westmor- land by his 2nd wife Lady Joane Beaufort, the legitimated da. of John "of Qaunt," Di ke OF Lancaster. He d. as above 10 July 1400, and was bur. in the Grey Friars at Northampton. His widow la. Walter (Blount), 1st B.uuw Movntjoy, who d. 1 Aug. 1474. She d. 20 Sep. 14S0. and was bur. atPleshy, Essex. Her will, not dated, pr. 31 Oct. 1 180. [Humphrey Stafford, stylod Earl of Stafford, a and h. ap. He m. Margaret, da. of (and whose issue became heir to) Edmund (Beaufort), Duke of SoMBBSET. He d. v.p. being slain on the Lancastrian side at the first battle of St. Albans, 22 May 1455. His widow m. Sir Richard DaUilu] ( a ) He is called " Earl of Buckingham and Stafford," wbpn cr. a Luke (1444) according to the recital of that creation in the Parliamentary settlement of his pre- cedency. In an indenture 13 Feb. (1443/4) 22 Hen. VI. he is styled " The Right Mighty Prince Humphrey, Earl of Buckingham, Hereford, Stafford, Northampton, and Perehe, Lord of Brecknock and Holderness." He did not. however, add thereto the title of " Em-l of Essex," tho' bis grandfather, Thomas, Duke of Gloucester and Earl of Buckingham (abovenamed) had assumed that title, (as well as those of Hereford and Northampton) having m. the da. and coheir of Humphrey (de Bohun) Earl of Hereford, Essex, and Northampton. The Earldom of Perehe was a foreign title and the Lordships of Brecknock and Holdei'ncss were not peerage dignities. ( b ) The precedency belonging (chronologically) to this creation was interfered with by the creation of the Dukedom of Warwick, 5 April following, with precedence next after the Duke of Norfolk and before that of the Duke of Buckingham. The controversy tlms raised was settled by Pari, giving to each Duke alternately, year and year about, the precedency. It was, however, very shortly terminated altogether, by the death, K.p.m., of the Duke of Warwick, 1 1 June 1445.
