Margaret, 1st da. of Keunet (Mackenzie), 3d Earl of Seaforth [S.], by Isabel, da, of Sir John Mackenzie, of Tarbat. He d. 1705. III. 1705, 3. Kenneth (Sutherland), Lord Duffus [S.], 1st s. to and h., took his seat in Pari. [S.] 28 Oct. 1706, and voted for the 1716. Union ; was a Capt. R.N. and taken prisoner by the French 29 June 1711, after a desperate resistance. He joined the rising in behalf of the House of Stuart in 1715 and was accordingly by act 1 George L attainted^) 30 June 1716, being sent from Hamburgh to England where in Aug. ( a ) For the insurrection of 1715 no less than 19 Scotch Peerages, together with the Earldom of Derwentwater, the Rarony of Widdrington, and the Dukedom of Ormond in England (which last, however, was held with the Barony of Dingwall [S.], and so is included among the 19 Scotch Peerages abuvenamed) were forfeited by attainder. This, however, in ten cases (those marked with an * asterisk) was reversed by acts of Pari, in 1821, 1826 and subsequently, while in one case, that of Sinclair, it came to an end. Restored 2S June 1853. Seaforth (Mackenzie), Earldom. The Grantee's heirs male of body ex. 11 Jan. 1815. Sinclair /"Sinclair), Barony. The effect of the attainder came to an end 30 Nov, 1762, and the Peerage was allowed accordingly.
- Sodthesk ( Carnegie), Earldom. Restored 2 July 1855.
Wintoun (Seton), Earldom. The Earl d. s.p. 19 Dec. 1749. The holders of five of these peerages — Carnwath, Kenmure, Nairne, Nithsdale and Wintoun, together with the English Lords, Derwentwater and Widdrington, were condemned to death. Derwentwater and Kenmure were beheaded 24 Feb. 1715/6, Nithsdale having effected his escape the previous day. Carnwath, Nairn, and Wid- drington were respited till preserved by the act of indemnity, while Wintoun, on 4 Aug. 1716, also effected his escape. "A large breadth of land was forfeited by special
