He m. 14 Oct. 17C5, at Haddington, in Scotland, and again 29 Aug. 17CG, at Eothwell, co. York, Catharine, da. of Metcalfe Proctor, of Thorpe, near Leeds, co. York, by his 1st wife, Martha, da. of John Disney, of Lincoln. She, who was bap. 10 Oct. 1746, at Rothwell afsd., d, at sea on board 11. M. ship "Diana," 14 Oct. 1791. Han. sq., entered the army, 1763, becoming Lieut. 1st Horse Guards, 17CS. Secretary and Comptroller of the House- hold to the Queen Consort, 1784-1814. Treasurer thereof, 1814. F.S.A., 1784. He m., 14 June 1785, at St. Geo. nan. sq., Harriet Elizabeth, da. and coheir of John Marsh, of Warcsley Park, co. Huntingdon. He d. s.p. 10 Dec. 1816, in his 69th year, at the Grange, near Rotherham, co. York, and was bur. in Rotherham Church, when the Earldom of Efhnghm (created in 1731), became extinct. Will pr. 1817. Thomas Howard, of Great Bookliam, Surrey, 3d hut 1st surv. s. and h. of George H. of the same, who was next br. to Francis, 6th Baron Howard of Effingham, abovenamed. He was b. 29 Nov. and bap. 25 Dec. 1767, at St. Anne's, Manchester ; entered the army 17S6, was in command at Vittoria and Nive, becoming finally, 1837, General in the army and Col. of the 3rd Foot, 1832. K.C.B., 12 April 1815 ; Knight of the Tower and Sword of Portugal : G.C.B., 17 March 1820 ; Deputy Earl Marshal for the coronation of George IV, in July 1821 ; and was, 27 Jan. 1837, a: EARL OF EFFINGHAM. He m. 27 May 1800 at St. Geo. Han. Sq. Charlotte, da. of Neil (Primrose), 3d Earl op Rosedery [S.J by his 2d wife, Mary, da. of Sir Francis Vincent, Bart. He d. 13 Feb. 1845, at Brighton, aged 77. Will pr. April 1845. His widow, who was i. 27 Aug. 1776, at Holland House, Kensington, m. 30 April 1858 (being then in her 82d year ! !) at Preston, near Brighton, Thomas Holmes, a Scripture Reader. She d. 17 Sep. 1864, at Brighton in her 89th year. Will pr. Dec. 1864. 2 and 13. Henry (Howard), Earl op Effing- ham, and Baron Howard of Effinoham, s. and h. b. He m. 18 Aug. 1832, at St. Geo., Han. Sq., Eliza, da. of Gen. Sir Gordon Drummond, G.C.B. ( a ) There are several notices of the 3d Earl, a somewhat eccentric character, in Wraxall's " Memoirs" mentioning his sympathy with the Gordon rioters, with the Americans, in the American war, &c. When Treasurer of the Household he carried his official wand together with his baton as Deputy Earl Marshal, and was con- sequently nicknamed " The Devil on two Slicks." As to his partiality for " a dirty scirt"[skil] see vol. i, p. 352, note "a," sub " Bessborough," among the principal delights of the Men of Fashion in 1782.
